A new book in English on the Jaffa-Jerusalem Railway - its political background, construction, history and development written by Dr. Anthony Travis, was published in 2009 jointly by the Shapell Manuscript Foundation (www.shapell.org) and the Hebrew University Magnes Press.
In spite of the apology in the preface that source material
is limited, the author has assembled a wealth of information and a superb
collection of photographs from the beginning of construction of the line in 1890
and even before, to modern times. The background and events leading up to the
initiation of the project, the early years, the involvement of the British
forces in World War I and the subsequent mandatory period, the establishment of
Israel Railways after the foundation of the state and the future of train travel
to Jerusalem are described in detail and illustrated by hundreds of photographs.
